Before you start
You need:- Access to the Upsun Dispatch organization you want to connect.
- An organization owner or admin role in Upsun Dispatch to connect a Slack workspace or change notification rules. Members can view rules.
- Permission in Slack to authorize apps for the Slack workspace you want to connect.
- At least one Slack channel where Upsun Dispatch notifications should be posted.
Slack notification rules are managed separately from version control system and ticketing integrations. Connect the integrations your workflows need, then use Slack rules to route notifications for those workflows.
Connect Slack
1
Open Slack integration settings
In the Upsun Dispatch console, go to Settings > Integrations > Slack.
2
Start the Slack connection
Select Add to Slack. Upsun Dispatch sends you to Slack to authorize the connection.
3
Authorize Upsun Dispatch in Slack
Review the Slack authorization screen and approve access for the intended Slack workspace.
4
Add your first notification rule
After authorization, the console opens Settings > Notifications with a Slack is connected message and a prompt to add a rule.
Slack permissions
Slack shows the exact permissions requested during authorization. Review that screen before approving the connection, and approve it only if it matches your organization’s policy. The Slack app requests these scopes:chat:writechannels:readgroups:read
- Maintain the Slack connection for your Upsun Dispatch organization.
- Show available Slack channels when you create or edit notification rules.
- Post notifications to the channels selected in those rules.
Manage notification rules
Go to Settings > Notifications to work with Slack notification rules. Each Slack notification rule targets one or more Slack channels. Rules can apply broadly or skip specific combinations so notifications go only where they are useful. From the Slack notification settings, you can:- Create a rule for one or more Slack channels.
- Edit an existing rule.
- Remove a rule you no longer need.
- Search rules by workflow, repository, or channel.
- One or more Slack channels.
- All repositories or selected repositories.
- All workflows or selected workflows.
- The events to post:
- Run started
- Plan awaiting approval
- Plan approved
- Pull request opened for GitHub, or Merge request opened for GitLab
- Review started
- Review finished
- Exceptions: workflow and repository pairs that the rule skips.
- For Review finished, a format:
- Counts only posts summary counts.
- Full review posts the titles and files for up to 3 findings. Anyone in the channel can read those details.
/invite in that channel to add the connected Upsun Dispatch app. This applies to public and private channels.
If no Slack workspace is connected, the notification rules view starts empty. Connect Slack before creating rules.
Test Slack notifications
There is no built-in Test notification button in Slack settings. To confirm notifications are working, first create or select a notification rule that targets channels you can monitor. Then start workflow activity that matches that rule.- Create or edit a Slack notification rule for selected repositories, selected workflows, and one or more Slack channels you can monitor.
- Start or wait for workflow activity that matches that rule.
- Check the selected Slack channels for the notification.
- If the notification arrives, broaden the rule only as much as needed.
Troubleshooting
Slack does not show as connected
Return to Settings > Integrations > Slack and select Add to Slack again. Make sure the authorization finishes in Slack and redirects back to Upsun Dispatch. You cannot authorize Slack
Confirm that you are signed in to the correct Slack workspace and that your Slack account can authorize apps. If Slack blocks approval, ask a Slack administrator to complete the connection. No channels are available
The usual cause is that nobody has added the connected app to a Slack channel yet. Follow the channel invitation guidance in Manage notification rules, then return to the Slack notification settings and try again.A rule shows a channel state
A rule can show one of these channel states:- Archived: the channel was archived in Slack, so nothing posts there. Choose another channel.
- Missing: the app was removed from the channel, or the channel was deleted. Add the app to the channel again, or choose another channel.
- Workspace disconnected: the workspace of the channel was disconnected. Reconnect it, or choose another channel.
Notifications do not appear in Slack
Check that the rule matches the repository and workflow you expected. Then confirm that the selected Slack channels are still available and that Slack is still connected for the organization.Members see limited Slack settings
Members can view Slack notification rules. Only organization owners and admins can connect Slack or change rules. If you need to connect Slack or change rules, ask an organization owner or admin to make the change.Limits and behavior to know
- Slack rules only send notifications to selected Slack channels. They do not change workflow settings or repository access.
- Rules depend on the Slack workspace and channels remaining available.
- A rule can be edited or removed if its target channels become unavailable.
- Slack notification routing is configured in Settings > Notifications, while workflow behavior is configured in the relevant workflow settings.
